Controversy Comments of Bieber Anne Frank Comments

Justin Bieber has said he hopes Anne Frank "would have been a belieber", after visiting the museum at the Holocaust victim's former home.

The Canadian popstar has received widespread criticism for the comments, which he wrote in the guestbook at Anne Frank House in Amsterdam.

Fans - who are known as 'beliebers' - defended the 19-year-old, while a museum spokeswoman sought to play down any controversy caused by his remarks.

Bieber wrote: "Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber."

The Anne Frank Museum wrote about the visit in posts to its Facebook page , prompting a series of accusations over Bieber's perceived insensitivity.

But museum spokeswoman Maatje Mostart said the museum was happy to receive the singer and did not see anything offensive in his remarks.

Ms Mostart said he had called ahead and was given a guided tour. The Buzzfeed website later reported that a tour guide at the museum had pointed out that Anne was a fan of pop culture and may have been a fan of his.

Media commentators and some Twitter users expressed displeasure at the comment.

Comedian Ricky Gervais posted on his Twitter account: "I agree with Justin Bieber. Anne Frank would've loved his stuff. It's perfect for being played really really quietly so no one can hear it."

Scott Simon, host of US-based National Public Radio, said on Twitter: "Anne would be wise enough to just laugh."

Others commended Bieber for caring enough about Anne's story to visit the Amsterdam museum, which is built into the house where she and her family hid before their arrest.

Anne, who died at the age of 15 at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945, is one of the most well-known and celebrated Jewish victims of the Holocaust.

First published in 1947, her diary has been read by millions across the world and details the deprivations and personal triumphs she and her family experienced in hiding during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.

Glee School Show Apparence Upon ALL OF US TELEVISION

An episode of hit TV show Glee revolving around a school shooting has provoked mixed reactions from families and critics.

'Shooting Star' went out in the US on April 11 and showed students hiding in fear after hearing gun shots during singing practice.

During tense scenes choirmaster Will Schuester, played by Matthew Morrison, tells teenagers to tweet and text to spread news of the 'intruder'.

Another scene shows students recording messages for their loved ones.

Despite the storyline eventually revealing a false alarm, some residents of Newtown - where the Sandy Hook shootings took place - believe the episode was ill-timed.

Andrew Paley, whose twin sons survived the school massacre that killed 26, wrote that it was "too soon" and said that producers should have got in touch.

"Our kids and our own wounds are still too new," he posted on the Newtown Action Alliance Facebook page.

"The producers should be ashamed to not think of us and how we'd feel if we just happened to be watching ... they should have given Newtown a heads up."

Local paper The Newtown Bee also said the episode was likely to be "a little much for some residents to stomach".

But Anthony Lusardi - whose girlfriend Lauren Rousseau, a teacher, died in the shootings - gave his support to the show.

Actor Cory Monteith, creator Ryan Murphy and actor Matthew Morrison Actor Matthew Morrison (right) plays Glee choirmaster Will Schuester

"As long as it keeps the subject in the public's mind I'm all for it," he said. "My Lauren was a huge fan of the show. So I'm sure she would have approved."

The gun shots in the controversial episode turn out to be a false alarm and a flashback scene later reveals cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) confiscating a gun from a pupil, which accidentally fires.

Producers also prefaced the episode with a warning: "This episode of 'Glee' addresses the topic of school violence. Viewer discretion is advised."

Glee creator Ryan Murphy praised the cast on Twitter in the days running up to the broadcast, calling it "the most powerful emotional Glee ever".

But television critics were split on the merits of the episode.

The New York Daily News said it had the "unsettling feel of exploitation", while Billboard cautiously praised a "new feat" for the show's cast in tackling the issue.

The award-winning show, featuring a high school Glee club regularly bursting into song, has been a big hit for Fox since it began in 2009 and regularly tackles sensitive topics like sexuality, religion and domestic violence.

Kardashian's Ex lover The No-Show In Court

Kim Kardashian has attended a settlement hearing in her divorce case from professional basketball player Kris Humphries, but Humphries was nowhere to be seen.

Celebrity website TMZ reports Kardashian's estranged husband did not attend the mandatory meeting in Los Angeles on Friday morning.

The reality TV star, who is expecting a baby with boyfriend Kanye West, is seeking a divorce from Humphries after their 72-day marriage in 2011.

Humphries has contested Kardashian's divorce filing, instead asking the marriage to be annulled based on fraud.

The NBA star has not yet laid out his case for claiming fraud.

Friday's hearing would have marked the first time the pair had seen each other since their October 2011 split, TMZ reports.

It is unclear why Humphries did not attend or what that might mean for the case.

A Night Of Style & Glamour To Welcome Newlyweds Kim Kardashian And Kris Humphries - ArrivalsThe couple separated after 72 days of marriage

A trial is scheduled to begin on May 6 if the parties cannot reach a settlement first.

Kardashian and Humphries are both expected to testify at a trial, which would focus on whether parts of their courtship and marriage were staged for the reality TV show Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

Their whirlwind romance played out largely in front of the cameras.

The two were wed in August 2011 in a ceremony filmed and later aired as a two-hour special programme.

Kardashian, along with her two sisters, star in a number of reality shows based on their lives as entrepreneurs.

They are the daughters of the late attorney Robert Kardashian - who famously represented OJ Simpson in his 1995 murder trial - and business manager Kris Jenner.

Jenner is married to US Olympic gold medallist Bruce Jenner.

FW: Malawi: Madonna 'Demanded Special Treatment'

Subject: Malawi: Madonna 'Demanded Special Treatment'

Malawi's government has launched a scathing attack on Madonna, accusing her of demanding special treatment and exaggerating her contributions to the country during a tour last week.

The pop star has visited the southern African nation several times since 2006 and runs several projects there after adopting two children.

But her latest trip has raised the ire of President Joyce Banda's government, which claimed she had "demanded state attention" - unlike other international figures the country has hosted, such as footballers Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville.

"Granted, Madonna is a famed international musician. But that does not impose an injunction of obligation on any government under whose territory Madonna finds herself, including Malawi, to give her state treatment," the president's office said.

"Such treatment, even if she deserved it, is discretionary not obligatory."

On previous trips, Madonna has received numerous privileges, but during the latest visit she was reportedly denied use of the VIP section at the airport

Madonna Visits Malawi With Adopted ChildrenMadonna says she has paid for 10 schools to be built in Malawi

The government also questioned Madonna's intentions with her humanitarian efforts in Malawi, alleging that the singer "wants Malawi to be forever chained to the obligation of gratitude".

"Kindness, as far as its ordinary meaning is concerned, is free and anonymous. If it can't be free and silent, it is not kindness; it is something else. Blackmail is the closest it becomes," the statement said.

A spokesman for Madonna said claims that the singer had requested special treatment were "nonsense".

Madonna herself said she was "saddened" that President Banda had "chosen to release lies about what we've accomplished, my intentions, how I personally conducted myself while visiting Malawi and other untruths."

She said: "I have no intentions of being distracted by these ridiculous allegations.

"I came to Malawi seven years ago with honourable intentions.

Rio Ferdinand, David James, Gary Neville in Malawi in 2005.Ferdinand and other players won praise for their 2005 visit, above

"I returned earlier this month to view the new schools we built. I did not ever ask or demand special treatment at the airport or elsewhere during my visit. I will not be distracted or discouraged by other people's political agendas.

"I made a promise to the children of Malawi and I am keeping that promise."

Trevor Neilson, whose Global Philanthropy Group is managing Madonna's projects in Malawi, said: "Obviously these attacks are influenced by the fact that the president's sister was removed as the head of Madonna's organisation in Malawi due to concerns about mismanagement of $3.8m (£2.5m).

"As the largest private philanthropist to Malawi we would think that the government would be pleased that she is giving her time and money to one of the poorest countries in the world."

However, the statement from the president's office dismissed the claim that Ms Banda was angry because Anjimile Mtila-Oponyo had been fired as the CEO of the Raising Malawi charity.

The charity was to have built a $15m (£9.8m) academy for girls but the project was dropped because of the concerns, with Madonna saying instead she would build community schools.

Last week, Ms Banda reacted angrily to Madonna's claim to have built 10 schools in Malawi.

"Where are the 10 schools she has built? She is just building school blocks at already existing schools. In some cases she just renovated an already existing block. This is an insult to the people of Malawi. She can't be lying to the world at our expense," she said.

The man who provided the voice of Charlie Brown of Peanuts fame has pleaded guilty to stalking charges.

Peter Robbins admitted threatening and stalking both his ex-girlfriend and a plastic surgeon who gave her a breast enhancement he paid for.

San Diego's City News Service said the 56-year-old entered the plea in court on Wednesday and could get up to three years in prison at his sentencing next month.

Robbins makes a face during his arraignment in San DiegoPeter Robbins in a Californian court in January, 2013

Prosecutors said Robbins called his former girlfriend dozens of times a day and told her he would kill her and her son if she did not give back his dog and car.

They said he made similar threats and demanded a refund from the plastic surgeon.

The court heard that Robbins had called the plastic surgeon so many times, she was forced to move to a hotel temporarily, out of fear for her life.

She also hired an armed guard to stand outside her clinic.

Robbins voiced the title character in 1965's A Charlie Brown Christmas and 1966's It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

The Peanuts comic strip, which was written and illustrated by Charles M Schulz, ran from 1950 to 2000, and at its peak was read by 355 million people in 75 countries.

Subject: Daft Punk To Launch Album In Tiny Oz Town

A remote farming town in Australia is set to hit the global stage next month after French electro-pop duo Daft Punk picked it for the global launch of their new album.

Wee Waa, with a population of just 1,653 and about 500km northwest of Sydney, will host the official launch of Random Access Memories, Daft Punk's first album in eight years, local officials said.

The album will be released on May 21 but it is set to be played for the first time anywhere in the world at an exclusive 4,000-ticket party at the annual Wee Waa agricultural show on May 17.

Daft Punk themselves will not be attending, but the Wee Waa Show Society are claiming it as a major coup for the event, where the highlights are usually a pet show and wood-chopping contest.

"This year's event will be highly anticipated with the announcement of Daft Punk, a French band with millions of fans worldwide, having chosen the Wee Waa Show to become the official global site for the launch of their new album," the region's tourism authority said.

"The Wee Waa Show will host a playback of the new album to a packed audience for the global launch party.

"It is expected people will travel from far and wide to attend the show."

Ticket sales will be handled by The Crossing Theatre in Narrabri which is the nearest sizeable town, and go online this Friday for (AUS) $35, or £24.

Members of the Wee Waa Show Society will be guaranteed a ticket to the official Sony Music event, which is being described as an "album playback show" because the French outfit will not be present or performing live.

"We're still pinching ourselves. We don't know why, but why not?" society president Brett Dickinson told ABC radio.

"They just wanted somewhere that was different to what Daft Punk does. They're known for breaking down barriers and being creative and Wee Waa is uniquely Australian so they just said lets go to Wee Waa."

According to Rolling Stone magazine, the band of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter chose Wee Waa after reading about the Australia Telescope Compact Array, a collection of six radio astronomy dishes near Narrabri.

Formed in 1993, the Grammy Award-winning group are a major force in the French house music scene and are known for their elaborate, costumed live shows.

Subject: Cruz And Bardem Pay Tribute To Bigas Luna

Spaniard Josep Joan Bigas Luna has been lauded as a brilliant and ''truly special'' filmmaker following his death.

Some of the highest praise has come from actors Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz, two stars whose film careers he launched.

Bigas Luna, who was 67, died on Saturday in northeast Spain after a long battle with cancer.

The filmmaker was regarded as having had an excellent eye for spotting talent and a knack for stimulating on-screen chemistry between actors.

His 1992 film Jamon, Jamon received unanimous praise as "a classic" in the Spanish press on Sunday.

The director discovered Cruz and Bardem, who married in 2010, as well as giving early boosts to a host of other now well-known film muses, including Leonor Watling, Angela Molina, Francesca Neri and Valeria Marini.

SPAIN-CINEMA-BIGAS LUNA-FILESBigas Luna died whilst making his latest movie Segon Origen

Many of the roles in his films were explosively steamy, even erotic, but often explored with great insight aspects of modern Spain's quirkiness.

"He was charming, intelligent, ironic, and possessed of an utterly contagious hedonism," said Ferran Mascarell, culture spokesman for the government of Bigas Luna's native Catalan region.

"I don't know where to begin," Bardem said, adding that he owes Bigas Luna "the woman I love" and "a career that I never dreamed I could have".

Bardem's first film role was in Bigas Luna's The Ages of Lulu but it was his role co-starring with Cruz in Jamon, Jamon that many consider one of his most memorable.

He later went on to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as psychopathic assassin Anton Chigurh in Ethan and Joel Coen's No Country for Old Men and has also played villain Raoul Silva in Skyfall, the latest Bond movie.

In a heartfelt statement, Cruz said an early casting for The Ages of Lulu changed her life.

"In walked a man with a rascal's face: Bigas Luna," she said.

"The first thing he asked me was my age (she was 14). I said I was 17 and he, always very gently and without making me feel too bad, laughed in my face and said: 'Well, you won't make this movie, but I'll call you for another when you're older.' "

The actress said she was astonished when, three years later, the phone rang and it was Bigas Luna asking her to try out for Jamon, Jamon.

"When I was with him, I felt time stood still," Cruz said. "He was truly special."

Bigas Luna died while still working on his latest film, Segon Origen.

Subject: Fashion Designer Lilly Pulitzer Dies Age 81

Lilly Pulitzer, a Palm Beach socialite turned fashion designer who was famous for her tropical print dresses, has died at the age of 81.

Pulitzer, who married into the famous newspaper family, got her start in fashion by spilling orange juice on her clothes.

A rich housewife with time to spare and a husband who owned orange groves, she opened a juice stand in 1959 and asked her seamstress to make dresses in colourful prints that would camouflage fruit stains.

The dresses hung on a pipe behind her juice stand and soon outsold her drinks.

Jacqueline Kennedy, who attended boarding school with Pulitzer, even wore one of the sleeveless shifts in a Life magazine photo spread.

"Lilly has been a true inspiration to us and we will miss her," the Lilly Pulitzer brand wrote on its Facebook page.

"I designed collections around whatever struck my fancy ... fruits, vegetables, politics, or peacocks! I entered in with no business sense. It was a total change of life for me, but it made people happy," Pulitzer said 2009.

She also once said: "Style isn't just about what you wear, it's about how you live ... Being happy never goes out of style."

But it was not all straight forward.

Pulitzer closed her original company in the mid-1980s after filing for bankruptcy protection.

The label was revived about a decade later after being acquired by Sugartown Worldwide Inc.

Pulitzer retired from day-to-day operations in 1993, although she remained a consultant for the brand.

The designer was born Lilly McKim on November 1931, to a wealthy family in New York state.

In 1952, she married Pete Pulitzer, the grandson of newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer, whose bequest to Columbia University established the Pulitzer Prize.

They divorced in 1969.

Her second husband, Enrique Rousseau, died in 1993.

"I don't know how to explain what it was like to run my business, the joy of every day," she told Vanity Fair magazine in 2003.

"I got a kick every time I went into the shipping department ... I loved seeing (the dresses) going out the door."

Pulitzer, who was known for hosting parties barefoot at her Palm Beach home, also published two guides to entertaining.

"That's what life is all about: Let's have a party. Let's have it tonight," she said.
